Portfolio (OLD)

Writing Samples

One of my strengths is polished, concise writing. I am a long-time writing instructor, able to write, edit, and revise text for a variety of contexts (academic, journalistic, creative, narrative, website, marketing, business, blog, learning, video scripts, etc.) I adhere to plain, simple language when writing for diverse learners.

Articulate Storyline & Rise

I got solid experience with Articulate Storyline and Rise while working for University of Houston-Clear Lake. The Instructional Design and Technology (IDT) team obtained licenses and were able to design or repurpose learning content upon request for faculty. I have also created my own learning modules for teaching at community colleges. I’m adept at various types of interactions: drag/drop, changing states, slider, dial, branching triggers, hotspots, pop-up layers, etc.

Vyond

I am a big fan of Vyond. I have created micro-learning animations for Human Development Institute (University of Kentucky), personal projects, my ENGL 1301 courses, and fellow community college faculty. I hope to use Vyond more in future roles.

Canva

I discovered Canva in 2020 and am so glad I did. I initially used it to create infographics for teaching. I’ve since used it for presentations, videos, screencast recording, resumes, graphic organizers, and more. It is a great tool.

Final Cut Pro

I started using Final Cut Pro in early 2023. I had some experience with iMovie, so it was not too difficult to “level up” to Final Cut Pro. It is a spectacular tool.

Working with SMEs

To date, I have had three positions which require(d) working with subject matter experts. My experiences have been very good. At University of Houston-Clear Lake, SMEs (faculty members) were open-minded, accepted constructive feedback, and were eager to improve their instructional materials. At Human Development Institute, SMEs provided clarity and expertise on learning content. At C2 Technologies & CDC, SMEs and ISDs work together to shape learning materials in accordance with agency guidelines and standards. I enjoy working with SMEs because doing so is a good chance to display professionalism, communicate effectively, and work collaboratively.

Presentations

I’ve taught in classrooms since 2008 and consider myself a natural when it comes to delivering presentations. Preparation and practice are key. I have delivered virtual professional development sessions for University of Houston-Clear Lake, fielding questions from participants during and at the end of sessions. My work for C2 Technologies and CDC has occasionally called for presenting course prototypes and other project plans.

Video Scripts

My work for C2 Technologies and CDC calls for a lot of video scripting. This includes writing original content, segmenting it as appropriate, and deciding on visuals/graphics, stock footage, transitions, and on-screen text to go with parts of the video. I’ve also written a lot of video scripts for teaching materials and personal projects.

Lesson Scripts

A big part of my work as an instructional designer at CDC/C2 Technologies, as well as University of Kentucky/Human Development Institute, has been writing lesson scripts. I’ve also done a fair bit of lesson scripting for my own teaching. In this capacity, I use my skills with concise writing, chunking and organizing information, and creating formative and summative assessments.

Storyboards

Storyboarding is another part of my work as an instructional designer at CDC/C2 Technologies. I also worked on many storyboards for University of Kentucky/Human Development Institute. This stage is very satisfying because I’m not just writing and organizing content but deciding on form (where assessments will occur, how content will be delivered). This is the more creative and visual part.

Courses

I’ve enjoyed every course I’ve worked on. I’ve been fortunate to have a lot of variety, including topics such as emotional intelligence, conduct and performance management for supervisors, laboratory safety, etc. Many of the courses I’ve worked on have been web-based and self-paced, but I have experience with instructor-led training and other formats as well.

Quality Matters

I have Quality Matters certifications that required intensive course work: Applying the QM Rubric and Peer Reviewer. The courses taught me a lot about optimal course navigation, accessibility, organizing information into appropriate hierarchies, etc.

Artificial Intelligence

This section of my portfolio contains some aspects of my usage of artificial intelligence. My favorite tools currently are ChatGPT, Freepik Pikaso, HeyGen, and Google Notebook LM.

Miscellaneous

This section of my portfolio contains miscellaneous items related to my instructional design or eLearning development work. This includes reports for clients/customers, pre- and post-course assessments, course evaluations, planning documents, etc.
