I just ate out at one of my favorite Tex-Mex places in Houston: La Tapatia Mexican Cafe. If you are in Houston or ever visit Houston, give this place a shot. It’s been a favorite of mine for nearly fifteen years.

There are three locations that I’m aware of: 1) Montrose (Woodhead & Richmond), 2) Galleria (Chimney Rock & Richmond), and 3) Bellaire (Bellaire Blvd near Chimney Rock).
La Tapatia is a relaxed, comfortable environment. I never see it empty or overcrowded. However, if you are looking for loud and bustling, you might get that at peak times (not my usual time to go).
I’ve always gotten quick, friendly service that is not oversolicitous. They check on you without overdoing it. No complaints about food quality. The beef vegetable soup is amazing, as is their beef fajita plate (includes rice, charro or refried beans, guacamole, flour or corn tortillas, and pico de gallo). The bacon-wrapped jalapeno peppers & steak are likewise incredible.

I believe all locations have a bar area and a few TVs, so you will not miss Rockets, Astros, Texans, or Cougars games!
The layout of the Galleria location (my favorite one) is “open concept”; you’re not separated from guests in other sections. The lighting is medium level – not dark & dim but also not lit up with white fluorescence, a perfect in-between.
There’s plenty of parking because it’s located in a shopping plaza with stores not open past 5 or so. Even during the day when those stores are open, I’ve never had difficulty parking.
Overall, I like that this place has delectable food and is relaxed.
